Day 11. Skills employers look for in a UX Designer

Potential employers want candidates who not only have the requisite technical proficiencies but who can also demonstrate a deep understanding of user-centered design principles and methodologies.  

Essential skills and knowledge

A user-centered design approach

Highlight how you empathize with users, understand their pain points, and design solutions that effectively address their challenges.

User research methods

Talk about and be ready to show employers your proficiency in various user research methods. It’s essential they believe you know how to gather insights into user behaviors, preferences, and motivations. Employers seek candidates who are skilled in conducting user interviews, surveys, usability testing, and other research techniques to inform design decisions and validate assumptions.

Information architecture and interaction design

Their ideal candidate should be adept at organizing content, defining navigation structures, and designing intuitive user interfaces that facilitate seamless interactions.

Prototyping and user testing

Employers value candidates who can translate design concepts into interactive prototypes using tools such as Sketch, Adobe XD, or Figma. 

Visual design fundamentals

Employers need to see that you have a solid understanding of visual design fundamentals, including font selection, color theory, and layout principles essential for creating visually appealing and cohesive designs. 

Communication and collaboration

As a good potential candidate, you should be able to articulate your design decisions, describe how you would present your work to stakeholders, and explain how you collaborate with cross-functional teams including developers, product managers, and marketers.

Problem solving and critical thinking

As a UX designer, you will often need to identify and solve complex design challenges, so you have to show and tell prospective employers how you can and will approach problems analytically and creatively. This is something they value highly.

Empathy and user focus 

Throughout your interview and portfolio employers will want to see evidence of your empathy towards users and a deep understanding of their needs, goals, and frustrations in your UX design stories and examples.

 

Standing out from the crowd

You need to sell yourself even before you get the chance to sell yourself. There are four important things that you can actually start thinking about right now that will help you differentiate yourself from other candidates when you’re ready to apply for that first position. They are:

Create a compelling portfolio

A well-curated portfolio showcasing your UX projects and design process is essential for demonstrating your skills and experience to potential employers. So you will want to focus on highlighting your best work, including case studies that outline your approach—how you defined user problems and the thinking, ideating, strategizing, and iterating you went through to solve that problem--as well as the challenges you faced and the outcomes you achieved. 

Tailor your resume to the position

Customize your resume to emphasize all of the relevant skills, experiences, and accomplishments that align with the requirements of UX design roles you are applying for. Highlight your UX-related projects, certifications, and any relevant experience, such as internships or freelance work.

Build a strong online presence

Establishing a strong online presence through platforms like LinkedIn, Behance, or Dribbble can help you showcase your expertise and connect you with professionals in the UX design community.

Network and keep developing professionally  

Networking with professionals in the UX industry can provide valuable opportunities for learning, mentorship, and career advancement. Attend UX events, conferences, and workshops to expand your network and stay up to date on industry trends. You should also invest in continuous professional development by taking other online courses, attending webinars, or obtaining relevant certifications to enhance your skills and qualifications.
